PET / PETP

PET / PETP – Polyethylene terephthalate
PET is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic with a good combination of mechanical, thermal and electrical properties, making it suitable for a very wide range of applications. PET semi-finished products are produced by extrusion into sheets, rods and tubes. The material is supplied in natural white, but is also available in black and glass-fibre reinforced grades.

PET is characterised by high strength and stiffness, but low notched impact strength. It is dimensionally stable and has low water absorption, but prolonged exposure to, or use in, hot water above approx. 70°C may cause hydrolysis. Therefore, PET is used in mechanical engineering, typically for relatively highly loaded plastic components. Often in combination with requirements for high dimensional accuracy, wear resistance and low friction. PET is also available with a lubricant (self-lubricating, PET GL, TX or similar), which reduces friction and increases wear resistance.

The same family also includes PETG, an amorphous type supplied in clear and opal sheets with high impact strength, and which can be thermoformed. PETG is often used for guarding as well as for containers and similar applications in the food sector. However, PETG is not UV-resistant.

Applications
PET is widely used in the electronics industry. And as PET/PETG is FDA-approved, the food industry is also a major consumer; due to its environmental friendliness it is also widely used for packaging and bottles (PET), e.g. as a replacement for PVC.
