PMMA
PMMA – Polymethyl methacrylate (Acrylic, Plexiglas)
PMMA is an amorphous material that can largely be used where glass was previously used. In industry, the clear and smoke-tinted sheet is mainly used, while the opal white and the many different coloured sheets are used especially in the design and advertising industry. PMMA sheets are best known in the extruded version, as they have the tightest tolerances. Cast sheets have the advantage that they can be produced in thicker versions as well as in blocks. PMMA is also produced in tubes and rods, and several grades with special properties are available.
PMMA is UV-resistant and has good light transmission. The material has high stiffness and a nice surface gloss. Impact strength is 6–8 times higher than glass, but the surface is not as hard and will therefore be more susceptible to scratches. PMMA is a very notch-sensitive material, which should be taken into account in connection with machining. PMMA is suitable for thermoforming, bending over a heating wire, and bonding.
Applications
PMMA is often used for guards, enclosures and secondary glazing, as well as other applications where, for weight reasons, glass can advantageously be replaced with acrylic. For illuminated signs, displays and decoration, PMMA is a widely used material. The possibilities are almost endless, both in terms of colours and shapes.
