PP – Polypropylene
PP, which is a member of the polyolefin family, is a semi-crystalline material, but it can also occur in an amorphous form. PP is suitable for thermoforming. The material loses impact strength and becomes brittle at temperatures below 0°C, while it retains its strength up to 100–120°C – also in hot water/steam.
PP is a relatively inexpensive material with good chemical resistance. PP semi-finished products such as sheets, rods, solid-wall pipes and pressure pipes are normally extruded in grey RAL 7032 or natural.
Applications
Sheets are also supplied in a pressed version. In addition, PP is produced in modified versions, including with glass-reinforced polyester and EPDM. PP is widely used in the chemical industry, for example for tanks, containers and piping systems. As it withstands high temperatures and hot liquids, it is also used for autoclaves and pump components. Joining is done mechanically or by welding. As PP is also FDA-approved for use in contact with food, it is an obvious material to use in the food industry.
